Last week, with my out of office firmly on, Mum and I flew out to a favourite spot in the Algarve for a week of total rest and relaxation.
We initially booked a cheap Airbnb but quickly realised what a mistake that was and managed to get in at Sao Rafael Atlantico Here we spent the week doing very little, lazing by the pool, eating and drinking as much as possible. We treated ourselves to a full body massage at the spa, gorged on freshly caught fish, and probably drank more Vinho Verde than water. When we weren’t chatting about anything and everything, I caught up on some reading (I read Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll and loved it), Mum finally joined the 21st century and downloaded Spotify (even if she did only listen to Rick Astley’s new album) and the rest of the time was peppered with passion fruit Sangria.
I visited Sao Rafael with Marc last year, and although i’m not normally one for visiting the same place twice, it really stole my heart. So when Mum mentioned she’d like to go away just the two of us for some r & r, I knew it would be perfect. Sao Rafael is a real gem in that its peaceful enough to wander the bougainvillea lined streets without seeing another person, yet the few restaurants there are in the area are excellent, and fairly full. I lost count of how many times we said ‘where did all of these people come from?’. I’ve listed some tried and tested favourite spots below…
